
In the early 1990s, we created the Heart Center at Methodist Hospital, which became the most preferred provider of heart services in South Texas. In November 2001, the Heart Center evolved into the Methodist Heart Hospital*. Located within Methodist Hospital, Methodist Heart Hospital offers the most comprehensive cardiology services in South Texas. Surveys consistently show that our physicians, nurses and staff are the most respected in the region. Our heart patients have full access to comprehensive care for their entire body. - The first balloon angioplasty in theregion in 1981
- The region’s first human heart valve transplant in 1986

- Methodist Heart Hospital is the largest hospital in South Texas dedicated to matters of the heart with 120,000 square feet and 120 beds dedicated to cardiac care. Since 2000, Methodist Healthcare has consistently provided more open heart surgeries than any other hospital or health care system in San Antonio, making it one of the busiest programs in Texas.
- In 2005, Methodist Heart Hospital cared for 3,400 heart patients, many of whom benefited from the variety of services available at Methodist Hospital. - Three cardiac catheterization labs, two electro-physiology labs and four dedicated cardiovascular operating suites, a 12-bed Cardiac Intensive Care Unit and a 14-bed Cardiac Surgical Intensive Care Unit, all equipped with the latest innovative technology.
- A cardiac catheterization holding area for patients allows for easy access to the cath labs as well as immediate post procedure care.
- Methodist Heart Hospital has the area’s only Cardiac Observation Unit for those patients experiencing possible heart-related problems. This six-bed unit can accomodate a patient for up to 23 hours while physicians wait for test results to make a diagnosis and treatment plan. This unit provides a calmer environment for the patient once they’ve been evaluated in the emergency department.
