- Built in 1973 by H.B. Zachry, Metropolitan General Hospital, as it was first known, was the first hospital in the country built using modular architectural design techniques similar to those used in building the historical Hilton Palacio del Rio Hotel along the San Antonio Riverwalk. In 1995, Metropolitan Hospital became part of the Methodist Healthcare System.
- Metropolitan Methodist Hospital welcomes 4,000 newborns into the world each year. The new Women’s Pavilion offers women and their families comfortable and spacious labor, delivery and recovery rooms. The Pavilion features seven antepartum beds for pregnant women experiencing complications before their due date, 16 labor and delivery suites, 48 postpartum beds for new mothers recovering after childbirth and 16 neonatal intensive care beds for babies born prematurely or who need special medical attention right after birth. For those mothers who wish to upgrade to larger, private rooms, four special suites are available on a first-come, first-served basis for an additional fee. - Three Methodist Family Health Centers are locatedon the west, south and southeast sides of San Antonioto better facilitate access to health care for people living in these areas. The centers offer free pregnancy testing, physician referrals for prenatal care, information on free transportation to doctors’ appointments on the Health Bus and assistance in applying for Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program.
- Metropolitan Methodist Hospital Emergency Department underwent a complete renovation and now features a more family friendly environment with 24 individual treatment rooms to enhance privacy, each with cable TV. A more spacious waiting room is also part of the expansion. Our Fast Track area provides services to those experiencing minor emergencies such as coughs, colds, sprains and cuts needing stitches. All emergency department physicians are bilingual.
- Metropolitan Methodist Hospital was among the nation’s first hospitals to utilize a centralized robotic drug distribution system that automates the storage, retrieval and dispensing of bar-coded medications. This system improves medication safety, speeds delivery and reduces inventory and labor costs, allowing pharmacists to spend more time on patient care and less time on routine manual tasks.
- Metropolitan Methodist Hospital’s orthopedic department has invested in the CiTM System, which uses computer navigation to guide surgeons in real time through a three-dimensional view of the patient’s knee joint. The orthpedic team has become one of San Antonio’s leading providers of knee replacements using this minimally-invasive computer-assisted surgery technology.
- The Rehabilitation Center offers both inpatient and outpatient therapy that helps patients maximize their capabilities after experiencing a stroke, hip fracture, brain injury, amputation or other conditions. A fully-equippedrehabilitation gym and garden area focus on helping patients return to the most meaningful and productive life possible.
- The Sleep Evaluation Center conducts a variety of diagnostic tests using the latest medical technology to assist physicians in the evaluation and treatment of patients with sleep disorders including sleep apnea, insomnia, narcolepsy and sleepwalking.
- Methodist Heart Services at Metropolitan Methodist Hospital feature afull range of cardiovascular treatments. Every step of the way, Metropolitan Methodist Hospital offers a top-notch team of professionals to care for you and your heart from the emergency department, testing and diagnosis, cardiac catheterization, the latest open-heart surgery techniques and intensive care and telemetry through rehabilitation.
- Behavioral Medicine services at Metropolitan Methodist Hospital offer a caring, supportive environment to meet the emotional and medical needs of seniors and adults. Inpatient services are available to address mood andanxiety disorders, major depression, bipolar disorder, post traumatic stress disorder, chemical dependency, schizophrenia and obsessive compulsive disorders. Partial hospitalization services provide comprehensive care to adults experiencing psychiatric problems, but who are able to succeed in the less intensive outpatient setting. A variety of integrated, therapeutic programs help patients and their families recover a sense of well-being.
- Behavioral Medicine Clinical Liaison—Consultation Team provides psychiatric evaluation, triage and counseling for families of critically ill and chronically ill patients. Our Psychiatric Assessment Team is available in the emergency department 24 hours a day, seven days a week to assist the emergency department physician in evaluating behavioral health emergencies and recommending treatment options.
- Metropolitan Methodist Hospital Cancer Services include physicians working alongside nurses, caseworkers and chaplains, to help patients and their families cope during the process of diagnosis and treatment. A highly-skilled staff provides compassionate care for cancer patients undergoing surgery and chemotherapy treatments. Inpatients receive a complimentary guidebook to help them find the resources they may need from proper nutrition to advice on how to talk their family and employerabout cancer. They also receive a journal to record treatments, medications, fatigue level and pain. In 2005, Methodist Healthcare’s Cancer Services received a prestigious three-year commendation after a comprehensive survey by the American College of Surgeons’ Commission on Cancer.
