Northeast Methodist Hospital* has played a major role in the phenomenal economic growth experienced in northeast Bexar County. Located in the city of Live Oak at Interstate 35 and Judson Road, Northeast Methodist Hospital has undergone a $50 million renovation to upgrade the facilities and expand services to meet the needs of the surrounding community. Northeast Methodist Hospital has built upon its already well-deserved reputation by offering outstanding emergency care for adults and children, open heart surgery, cardiac catheterization, general surgery, orthopedics, rehabilitation, gastroenterology, behavioral medicine and cancer care.
Hospital Highlights
- Northeast Methodist Hospital opened in 1985 as Village Oaks Hospital and became part of the Methodist Healthcare System in 1995. The hospital’s name was changed to Northeast Methodist Hospital.
- In March 2004, Northeast Methodist Hospital began an expansion project to meet the needs of the rapidly growing community of Northeast Bexar County and residents living in the adjacent counties of Guadalupe and Comal. As a result, the hospital has undergone an “extreme makeover” inside and out. The hospital has a new main entrance, spacious lobby, an emergency department that has doubled in size and features 26 individual treatment rooms with cable television and 10 Fast Track rooms to help the staff care for patients with less urgent needs, but in a more timely fashion.
- Behavioral Medicine Clinical Liaison—Consultation Team provides Psychiatric Evaluation, Triage and Counseling for families of critically ill and chronically ill patients. Our Psychiatric Assessment Team is available in the emergency room 24 hours a day, seven days a week to assist the Emergency Room physician in evaluating behavioral health emergencies and recommending treatment.
- The staff at Northeast Methodist Hospital performs 500 cardiac catheterizations a month, putting it among the fastest growing heart services program in South Texas. Northeast Methodist Hospital was among the first hospitals in the nation to introduce a new surgical procedure using drug-coated stents. This innovative surgery helps reduce a patient’s need for future stents. Treatments for coronary artery disease also include open heart surgery and cardiac catheterization. Northeast Methodist Hospital is also unique in providing individualized education and guidance by
a dedicated cardiac liaison nurse. - Thanks to a new minimally-invasive procedure, physicians at Northeast Methodist Hospital offer hope to patients with peripheral vascular disease. Doctors are using the latest technological device to actually shave plaque from the inside of leg arteries to restore blood flow and possibly help patients avoid leg amputation. Northeast Methodist Hospital is also taking part in a registry project that will analyze the removed plaque to determine potential genetic markers for peripheral vascular disease.
- Northeast Methodist Hospital Cancer Services provide compassionate care that includes physicians working alongside nurses (many with special oncology nursing certifications), dietitians, caseworkers and chaplains. Team members work with individual patients and their families to help them cope during the process of diagnosis, surgery, chemotherapy and/or radiation treatment.
- With millions of Americans suffering from chronic gastroesophageal reflux disease (more commonly known as heartburn), Northeast Methodist Hospital offers the most advanced procedures to diagnose the disorder. The Bravo device is a non-invasive procedure consisting of a small capsule that is temporarily attached to the esophagus. The results from this quick and easy diagnostic test reveal what’s causing the reflux and ways it can be treated based on its severity.
- Physical therapy is an integral part of health care. The Outpatient Physical Therapy Center staff is devoted to treating and preventing injury and physical disabilities including arthritis, scoliosis, joint replacement and work-related injuries among many others. The center, located directly across the street from Northeast Methodist Hospital, offers outpatient therapy aimed at relieving pain and discomfort, rebuilding strength, enhancing stability, and helping patients adapt to permanent physical changes. A specially designed indoor pool provides therapy that’s sometimes easier when done in the water. Therapists work with patients in groups and one-on-one. Call (210) 757-8500 for more information.
- The Wellness Center at Northeast Methodist Hospital enables its members to maintain good health or restore it with state-of-the art equipment and knowledgeable staff. This hospital-based facility provides members with fitness assessments and personalized exercise programs and includes treadmills, Tectrix Cycles, Stairmasters, cross-country skiers, a therapeutic pool with arthritis aquatic classes, water aerobics and more. - Northeast Methodist Hospital takes pride in its community outreach efforts including various fund-raising endeavors for non-profit organizations that serve the Randolph Metrocom area of Bexar County. Northeast Methodist Hospital is an annual sponsor of the Greater Randolph Area Partners in Education Foundation Golf Tournament. Proceeds from the tournament help to provide emergency funds to children in need of medical care including eye exams and glasses, prescription medication, clothing and shoes. The program helps children in the Judson Independent School District and the Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City Independent School District.
- The Northeast Methodist Hospital Volunteer Auxiliary, Heartbeat of the Hospital, contributes many hours taking care of the hospital’s information desk, providing refreshments to family members whose loved ones are undergoing surgery and running the hospital’s gift shop. Profits from the shop help fund five $1,000 scholarships for students planning a career in the medical field. The volunteers also award grants to several non-profit programs in Bexar County.
- The Northeast Methodist volunteers spearheaded a WHALE (We Have A Little Emergency) program in which stickers are distributed to parents to affix to their vehicle and child’s car safety seat. In case the car is involved in a crash, the child can be more easily identified by emergency medical workers if the driver is unconscious or disoriented. Hundreds of sticker kits have been issued to parents. Local law enforcement have helped with distribution and education on the project.
