If nurses have a concern or issue related to a staffing situation, there is now a process to take the issue forward.  As part of the 7 new Healthy Work Environment policies that were rolled out in April 2008, a Staffing Issues Committee was created to provide nurses the opportunity to request a review of a staffing situation, concern or issue.  When an issue arises, the nurse should complete the review form and turn it in within one week (see attached form) The form can be sent inter-office mail to Michele Patterson, Chairperson, or it can be submitted to Michele via e-mail.  Click here to access the form or go to the Meditech library and look for the form under “Nursing Staffing Issues Committee”.

The issue will then be reviewed by a committee made up of members from the facilities’ Staff Nurse Leadership Councils and the CNO will be made aware of the staff concern. The committee will review the situation and the suggested recommendation and then as deemed appropriate will make a recommendation to nursing leadership. The nurse that submitted the form will receive feedback from the committee.

This process is one of the many ways that staff nurses have a voice.  For more information go to the “Methodist Nurses” link of this website and see the article on “You Have a Voice”.

COMING SOON!!  Your Meditech User ID will change to your 3-4 ID.  For more information click on the attached link to see when your facility will be converting.

To date (May - June) we have had 53 new packets submitted — the majority from MH, MCH and MSTH.  If you have questions regarding the program please click on the following link http://www.sanursing.com/?page_id=142.

Below are some Questions and Answers that have come up since the implementation of the new program.

Q:  Since we transitioned to the new Nursing Clinical Excellence Program from the old STEPP Program, the nurses are given a “grace period” of 6 months to validate if needed.  What does this mean?

A:  We understand that switching programs creates some confusion.  If staff need a little extra time getting used to the new program and forms, they are allowed a grace period to submit their information.  During their feedback they should be reviewing the points menu with their manager to keep on track for their plans to validate or promote.  This grace period will extend through December 30, 2008.

Q:  There are only specific committees listed under the service pillar for credit.  What about other formal committees?

A:  The list of meetings was used as an example.  Staff can get credit for other committees when their membership is approved through their Manager/Director and it is an approved committee (meaning the staff person’s membership was approved by the committee or appointed by the committee).

Q:  Will there be changes / additions made to the pillar menus going forward?

A:  Yes.  We will gather staff feedback via the Clinical Excellence Liaisons June through August and will meet about official changes in September for changes to be made and rolled out in 2009.  The Nursing Clinical Excellence Committee is already working on adding some items next year to the service pillar.  Q:  Credit for Wound Vac certification is on the pillars.  We have heard this is no longer offered.  What is going to happen with this menu item?

A:  KCI no longer provides the CEU 8 hour certification.  They now provide a 2 hour inservice training starting July 7, 2008.  MHS previously separated the Wound Vac and Skin Care Champions.  This will soon be consolidated to Skin Care Champions.  When the pillar menus are updated for 2009 this will be updated accordingly.  Note:  The 2 hour wound vac inservice will still count on the Clinical Excellence Program until official changes are made.

The ANA Code of Ethics for Nursing with Interpretive Statement is now available on SANursing, under the tab Your Career .  The Code of Ethics was added to SANursing to enhance the Magnetism Force # 6 (Quality of Care) and Force #14 (Professional Development). In addition, SANursing has a link to the ANA online continuing education program about the Code of Ethics. The program is approved for 1.8 contact hours and will expire December 31, 2008. The first 100 nurses to complete the CE program and submit a copy of their certificate to the Education & Research Department (fax number - 575-6628) will receive recognition and a small gift.

Seven Methodist Healthcare nurses have been named South Texas Nurse Imagemakers. The Delta Alpha Chapter-a-Large of Sigma theta Tau International Nursing Honor Society selected them because they model a professional image and positive caring attitude; leadership qualities; a commitment to continuous learning; and significant contributions to the organization and community. Congratulations!
